Law of being of the for-itself

Being and Nothingness

The Law of being of the for-itself describes consciousness as being itself only by failing to coincide completely with itself. Its presence to itself is not a self-contained plenitude but an unstable unity: an internal distance, impossible to treat as a separate thing, through which consciousness continually makes its own nothingness.
